The last two week seem like a blur for Jake and I. We’ve been working at our seasonal gig in Trinity County, CA and what has felt like months, (two weeks), a small lightning storm decided to cause havoc.
The fire was small and on the other side of the river, a few miles away at first. We all waited on pins and needles until word came down that it was inching towards us and we should probably start packing in case we had to move. The smoke has been so dense we could hardly see across this beautiful river we have been at this summer. Our eyes and throats sure have felt the sting as the fire grew a little more everyday.
After working a morning shift we settled in to watch a movie with another family and the words were finally heard, “It’s time to go.” It only took us 30 minutes to be on the road, and it only took 30 minutes for the flames to touch the end of this tiny town of Big Flat. We decided to escape the smoke and headed north to Oregon where family and friends awaited with open arms for not only us, but our dear friends and new family from California.
Even a few days past and it still feels a little surreal. Even as the fire swept through the town we got word that all of the businesses and structures on the highway were saved, firefighters are modern day warriors. The fire is still sweeping over ridges and chasing people out of their homes, the wind is guiding it back and forth, up and down, and we sit here waiting and hoping for all the best for everyone on the Trinity River.
